Phase III - Construction and Commissioning Support

The United States Department of Energy has identified that GeoExchange is the most efficient HVAC application where local geology makes it possible. On average, forty percent of the energy used in this country is associated to heating and cooling buildings. These statistics highlight the importance of maintaining peak efficiency from conception through construction and commissioning phases of the Mechanical HVAC system in relation to your GeoExchange design.

Even though you have confidence in Water Energy Design and the documentation received from us for Phase II, the battle for optimum energy efficiency isn't over yet. A majority of the problems and inefficiencies that GeoExchange applications face aren't the ones in the design intent or specifications. Installation and trades professionals receiving the lowest-bid contract are destined to cut corners or misinterpret the design intent to complete the work with the least amount of impact to their bottom line. In addition, the details about equipment specifications, construction methods, and Earth-Coupling interface with the Mechanical HVAC components, are critical to installing the most efficient and robust GeoExchange applications.

Water Energy Design offers the following support during construction and commissioning:

Earth-Coupling construction and commissioning support items

  • Advise on Earth-Coupling and qualified geothermal contractor selection
  • Approve *Earth-Coupling specific component submittals
  • Review well and associated component costs
  • Consult owner on Earth-Coupling permit application process
  • Analyze drilling rock samples in support of well thermal transfer calculations
  • *Modify Earth-Coupling specific designs as required by developing conditions
  • Provide Earth-Coupling specific related periodic site visits
  • Comment as required on Earth-Coupling related Requests for Information (RFI)
  • Comment as required on Earth-Coupling related Change Orders
  • Advise on commissioning of *Earth-Coupling installation and related pump selection
  • Assist Earth-Coupling contractor in start up, balancing, and commissioning of earth system as applicable

*Water Energy Design employs ClimateMaster geothermal heat pumps as design basis, unless otherwise directed, when publishing your contracted design documentation. If another manufacturer's heat pumps are selected by the MEP as a design basis, the specifications for the chosen heat pumps must be provided to WED in writing. The required information includes, but not limited to, design parameters such as flow rates, entering and exiting water temperatures, pressure drops, filtration requirements, and more as defined on a case-by-case basis.

The following items are included at no extra charge when ClimateMaster Heat Pumps are deployed through Water Energy Distributors, Inc:

  • Approve overall GeoExchange distribution system and related trim items submittals (Earth-Coupling through heat pump output)
  • Modify earth-coupling designs as required by developing conditions
  • Provide final delivery system sign-off and commissioning support
  • Advise on earth-coupling, heat pump and related system elements through system output
  • Provide comprehensive sequence of operations documentation for geothermal system through heat pump output point
  • Assist various Earth-Coupling, HVAC contractors, and building commissioning personnel in the start up, balancing, and efficiency verification of system through heat pump output

Note: Water Energy Design is happy to provide to provide the construction and commissioning services stated above at additional cost when ClimateMaster equipment is not selected. The time to integrate geothermal heat pumps meeting all design guide specifications employed in the earth coupling design is minimal when the heat pump requirements and performance characteristics are known. However, heat pumps not meeting design guide specifications, or to verify compliance with the design, will require additional time and resources to integrate with the Earth-Coupling design.
