John Logan, graduated in UK from the Universities of Glasgow (B.Sc., First Class Hons.), and Cambridge (Ph.D.), and spent several years managing technology development and deployment at Bell Laboratories in USA. He is currently Regional Director, Maine for Water Energy Distributors, Inc., located in New Hampshire.
Water Energy Distributors, Inc. perfected the "standing column" well ground source coupled heat pump approach in Bangor, Maine in the 1970's. This is now the preferred technique being used in the Northeast and beyond, for recycling energy from the ground. Water Energy Distributors, Inc. have been involved in over 12,000 ground source coupled heat pump installations in New England, New York City, and Long Island, since 1974.
Dr. Logan has been associated with both residential and commercial geothermal installations in Maine, of which the Maine Audubon Visitors Center is a role model for low-cost, environmentally-friendly energy recycling in the State. Schools are now following this lead, as well as colleges, hotels, offices, hospitals, and factories, to reap the benefits of integrated heating, cooling, and process energy recycling.
For residential installations, at current Maine fossil fuel costs and electric rates, geothermal operating costs can be as low as 1/2 to 1/4 the cost of the alternative fossil fuels. While geothermal installation costs may be higher than traditional fossil fuel approaches, the much lower operating costs give quick payback on the investment.. Maintenance costs are also substantially lower for both residential and commercial installations.
In addition to being good for the environment, geothermal heat pumps for heating and cooling are good for electrical utilities. They provide efficient use of relatively "clean" electrical energy, and they supply potential load-leveling demand for electrical utilities.
